Society Introduction Welcome Message

대한내분비학회 회장 박정현 Dear members of the Korean Endocrine Society,

Happy New Year 2024, the Year of the Mysterious Blue Dragon!

It is my great honour to have been nominated and selected as the 34th Chairman of the Korean Endocrine Society. The Korean Endocrine Society was established in 1982 and, over the past 42 years, has not only developed in its own right but has also become the foundational base for numerous related academic societies.

The main function of the endocrine system is to maintain homeostasis. Only living organisms can preserve homeostasis within the body despite the fluctuations of numerous external parameters. To maintain homeostasis, precise recognition of the variable external parameters must be meticulously coordinated with the corresponding internal counteractions. I hope that in the year 2024, the Year of the Mysterious Blue Dragon, the Korean Endocrine Society will become more proactive in addressing and managing the various challenges arising from outside the Society.

In my opinion, the Korean medical care system is in a period of upheaval. It is extremely challenging to “catch two rabbits,” as the saying goes, by achieving both quality and accessibility in medical care at the same time, especially in the context of a limited national medical budget and legal constraints that fail to reflect the realities of healthcare. Moreover, there has been a progressive decline in the number of young doctors choosing to specialize in endocrinology. The Korean Endocrine Society must assume the role of an active coordinator to facilitate communication and collaboration among the numerous academic societies related to endocrinology in order to overcome this crisis.

Again, I would like to express my deep thanks from the bottom of my heart for nominating and selecting me as the 34th Chairman of the Korean Endocrine Society. Additionally, I wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2024, the Year of the Mysterious Blue Dragon.

대한내분비학회 이사장 정윤석 Greetings,

Happy New Year 2024 to all the members of the Korean Endocrine Society (KES).

The KES was founded in 1982, and over the past 40 years, it has consistently grown and developed, becoming a well-respected international academic society. The Seoul International Congress of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SICEM) and the SCI indexation of Endocrinology and Metabolism (EnM) are proud achievements that have been made possible by the dedication of our seniors, colleagues, and junior members. Despite these remarkable successes, we have faced some challenges due to socio-economic difficulties. Academic activities in endocrinology have slowed down, and the number of applicants for subspecialist training has decreased.

With hard work and dedication, anything is possible, and this also applies to the difficulties we are going through. During my tenure from 2023 to 2024, I will prioritize and pursue the following goals for KES, based on the vision of the society. The insight and wise opinions of our valued members will be the main driving force.

Firstly, we will prioritize the interests of our members. We will strive to lead the medical field by making KES a society that our members can be proud of, with no financial shortages. We will support the development of future generations and actively support front-line medical staff. We want to create a society where our members become the owners.

Secondly, we will work collaboratively with other academic societies and the wider community for the health and development of South Korea, as well as with an international scope. We will solidify and expand the KES, building synergy with not only internal medicine-related societies but all fields of study in medicine. We will provide accurate information on endocrine hormones and diseases, and engage in projects that make a social contribution, such as establishing a KES Foundation and providing diagnosis and treatment for rare diseases. We will expand academic exchanges with societies around the world, including Asia, Oceania, America, and Europe, and prepare to take a leading role. We will continue to develop and succeed with SICEM and nurture international-level representatives and committee members. We will work to make EnM a top-tier representative journal in endocrinology.

The Committee of Planning has proposed a vision for the 50th anniversary of KES, with a focus on three key areas: enterprise, society, and governance (ESG), with the goal of becoming a world-class society. This means that we will advance our core activities, expand our social influence, and create a sustainable organization.

We will prudently address various issues by gathering the wisdom of our members, creating a family-like atmosphere of unity and will, and building a society based on mutual trust, encouragement, and harmony. We will make KES a society filled with fun and hope by taking the insights of our senior members into account, working closely with colleagues, and listening to the opinions of junior members about the future.

Thank you.
