Society Introduction Welcome Message

대한내분비학회 회장 성연아 Greetings,

I wish all members of the Korean Endocrine Society a healthy, happy, and joyful year in 2025.

I am both concerned and acutely aware of my responsibilities as I assume the role of chairperson of the Korean Endocrine Society. This comes at a time when we are facing a challenging environment, exacerbated by the ongoing medical crisis that began last year and shows no signs of abating.

For 43 years, our society has played a pivotal role in advancing basic, translational, and clinical research in endocrinology. We have also focused on the management and treatment of various endocrine diseases and have worked to elevate the profile of these diseases within medical policy and administration. Additionally, we have achieved continuous progress by launching our official journal, Endocrinology and Metabolism (EnM), 13 years ago and by organizing the Seoul International Congress of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SICEM). These initiatives have advanced us on our path toward becoming a world-class society. Building on this foundation, I am committed to diligently performing my duties as chairperson. I aim to support the society's executives, including the president, in implementing plans that will advance our society on a global scale.

I urge our members to support our younger colleagues, who represent the future of our society, especially during these challenging times. By doing so, we enable them to enhance their skills, contribute to academic progress, and improve clinical practices through endocrinology research, while also helping to expand our membership. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Korean Endocrine Society, and I hope that all your wishes will be fulfilled in 2025.

대한내분비학회 이사장 홍은경 Dear members of the Korean Endocrine Society,

As we leave behind the eventful year of 2024, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility. It is truly an honor to stand before you as the new president of our society.

Over the past 40 years, our society has evolved and firmly established itself as an international entity representing various subspecialty fields. I believe this achievement is a testament to the dedication and efforts of our members, as well as our current and former executives.

Unfortunately, the current reality of endocrinology departments is that endocrinology is not adequately recognized as a specialized field due to changes in the medical environment and socioeconomic values. Therefore, it is facing a significant crisis, marked by a sharp decrease in support for clinical fellows.

Upon reflection, it is clear that we play a crucial and significant role on the front lines of healthcare, ranging from preventive care to the management of rare diseases. Moreover, we embody the essence of essential medical care by providing support to clinicians in other departments.

Accordingly, I will leverage the strengths of endocrinologists to transform this crisis into an opportunity. Additionally, by fostering conversation, empathy, patience, dedication, and promoting 'unity and harmony,' I will address the following issues to achieve 'sustainable development of the society' alongside our members.

First, in response to the diminishing awareness and the perceived crisis within endocrinology, I plan to strengthen the foundation of our society and broaden its reach. This will be achieved by establishing an integrated society that promotes pride and participation among members, as well as collaboration and harmony across different regions and fields.

Second, I will establish a multi-institutional consultative body focused on specialization and expertise in endocrine diseases. This body will also promote public relations and government initiatives aimed at enhancing their relative value.

Third, I will engage in public relations and educational activities to highlight the unique aspects and complexities of various endocrine diseases. This will expand awareness of the importance of specialized education and treatment provided by endocrinologists.

Fourth, I will continue to support the outstanding projects initiated by the former president and the society management team to ensure ongoing development. We will also work to increase the stature of our society, as well as our academic conferences and journals, by diversifying the benefits derived from various research funds and by securing financial stability.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the former president, Chung Yoon-Sok, who has devoted himself to the society over the past two years. He has even taken care of the society’s work for me despite his busy schedule. Additionally, I extend my thanks to the staff members who have tirelessly contributed to the development and status of the society.

I am committed to attentively listening to the expectations and wishes of the members who hold the Endocrine Society dear. My goal is to foster an “accepting society” that encourages broader participation. I firmly believe that while individual efforts might fall short, the collective strength of many can help us surmount any challenge. I urge you to actively participate and cooperate, and I also pledge to do my utmost to drive KES forward into a new era of progress.

I hope you leave behind all the regrets and sorrows of the past year and embrace the energy of the blue snake in the new year, bringing you and your family wisdom, growth, and joyful changes.

Thank you.

Hong Eun Gyoung, President of the Korean Endocrine Society
